ABOUT STYLE / JET ENGLISH TESTS

STYLE and JET (Saxoncourt Tests for Young Learners of English / Junior English Test) are international systems of English achievement tests for children.  There are 9 levels, suitable for students from 6 to 17 years of age, or those attending Primary (Elementary) school and Secondary (Junior High) school.

With students now beginning to learn English at a young age and parents wishing to see their children making progress, STYLE and JET English tests are a response to the changing needs of teachers, schools and parents.

ORIGINS OF STYLE & JET TESTS

STYLE & JET English Tests were originally developed in 1993 as a direct result of requests from ELT professionals who were looking for a new, objective means of assessing their young students’ progress.

ETHOS & PHILOSOPHY OF STYLE & JET TESTS

Saxoncourt recognised that children’s English tests must be different from adult ones, so STYLE and JET were developed to be motivating and fun, testing what children actually know and thus providing an accurate reflection of their true knowledge

* The focus of the syllabus was on communication-based language and less specifically on rules of grammar.

* STYLE and JET’s task-based format (questions require students to respond in a variety of ways such as ticking, linking, numbering, colouring and circling correct answers) were chosen to reflect the way that children learn.

*  STYLE and JET English tests have an international theme, reflected by listening activities that use realistic English.

* Schools need not change from their existing courses.  A clear syllabus is supplied to all schools that participate in STYLE and JET English tests which details the question/answer forms and the vocabulary tested at each level.  These syllabi are used in conjunction with the school’s existing courses to prepare for STYLE and JET English tests.

* Each examinee receives a certificate of progress after taking the test to give students a sense of achievement.
